Ferraton Père & Fils
Les Grands Mûriers Cornas Syrah
Pulled from my cellar, Ferraton’s 2015 Cornas “Le Grands Muriers” pours a sort of violet/garnet color with a transparent core. Medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose the wine is developing with notes of dark bramble fruits, some blue fruits, purple flowers, Herbs de Provence, bacon fat, a touch of the animal, some olive tapenade and a kiss of baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium, bordering on medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Long, with a delicious rocky mineral finish. Whatever Michel Chapoutier is doing seems to be working. These wines from Ferraton rarely miss anymore and are absolute sleepers when it comes to value for money. This bottle of 2015 is drinking beautifully right now on the pop and pour and will continue to do so for the next 10+ easy.

Apr 22nd, 2023Decanted about three hours prior to dinner which was basically grilled steak three ways. This was an absolute joy already, if not still a glimpse into greater things yet to come. The 2015 Les Grands Mûriers is special. To start, the bouquet is beguiling. A positively feral example of Syrah with smoked bacon fat, tart dark brambles, deli case, Herbs de Provenance and new leather. On the palate, there was a ferrous minerality that accompanied the abundant dark fruits and spices meats. So compact and full of energy! I already love this wine and look forward to seeing what this does with some age. Already great with an extended decant; will age gracefully for twenty years, I’m sure of it.
