The 2016 Léoville-Poyferré appears to have closed up a bit on the nose, perhaps a little cowed by the strong showing of the 2015 on this occasion. It is very pure and begins to unfurl with aeration, but the aromatics are not coming out to play today. The palate is medium-bodied with fine boned tannins, beautifully proportioned and symmetrical. The oak is seamlessly integrated with a citrus touch on the finish. This will be awesome, but it will need time in bottle. Tasted at the Léoville-Poyferré vertical at the château with Sara Lecompte Cuvelier. (Neal Martin, Vinous, September 2022)

Beautifully balanced St. Julien with a solid backbone laced with violets. Enough structure to hold for 10+ years. I decanted for an hour and it wasn’t long enough.

Wow! Beautiful dark cherry liqueur style fruit, blackberries, dark cherries, some amazing vanillin notes, Julien elegance, sweet dark earth, dry stones, bright florals, acidy for days and great polish. Buy a bunch.

Drank 1/18/19 at the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux event in Miami.  All wines from the 2016 Vintage.

Tasting pour, no formal notes taken.  Most of these wines are very tight, and will require 5-15 years to really come together.  Many will likely improve a few points with time.

This was tied with the Beychevelle for my favorite St Julien of the night. Complex dark fruit with big tannins, showing better than the Leoville Barton at this stage.

2 hour decant and it’s barely peeking out from behind the cloak of tannins…
