The 2017 Pipparello pours a garnet color with funky Montmorency cherry, red carnations, and balsamic notes. Wonderful structure and delicious with the quail. Drink now with patience through 2037. Blend of primarily Sangiovese (70%) along with equal parts Sagrantino (15%) and Merlot (15%). Medium ruby color with purple highlights and a garnet rim. Aromas of black fruits, dark chocolate, violets, leather, forest floor and dried herbs. Black cherry, cassis and pomegranate flavors with additional hints of tobacco, black licorice and wet soil. Medium earthy/spicy finish and a grainy texture. Some grip and power but nicely balanced. Pleasant rustic quality. Solid value. — a year ago

Other commenters may not have prepared themselves for the sheer tannic power of sagrantino, even with only 15% in this blend. Pours a deep brick red veering toward brown, showing significant aging. But ready to drink, probably at its peak. Still, needs time to breathe. Strong saddle leather and horsetail (the plant) aromas backed by roasted game and a bouquet of spices that reminds me of a chocolate-heavy mole. — 4 months ago

The 2018 Montefalco Rosso captivates with a spicy mix of autumnal cherry sauce and plums complemented by hints of camphor and minty herbs. This is fleshy and fruity on the palate, yet balance is nicely maintained by juicy acidity, as a chalky mineral stain slowly saturates. Subtle tannins linger through the mentholated finale, as hints of licorice and bitter cherry taper off. (Eric Guido, Vinous, November 2022)

Very well “built” wine. Nicely balanced with good tannins. The taste reaches reasonably far into the palate. It lacks a bit of character. No fruit jumps out at you, and you don’t find yourself following different tasting themes. It sits there, happy in its craft. Goes well with red meat and rich pasta. — 5 years ago
