Rockbridge Vineyard

DeChiel Reserve Viognier 2016

Terroir!! This is a lovely example that a small place matters inside a larger sandbox. The Valley offers rich mineral soils and sunny, breezy aspects in Rockbridge. The result is classic Viognier without out the neon-lights. Seamless & Sophisticated, the purity is revealed in the harmony of apricot acids and polished minerality mouthfeel and floral aromatics. Quite the complete food wine! — 5 years ago

Dirty & Rowdy

Familiar Blanc California White Blend

Lots of different grapes in the sandbox here and everyone plays together so well. Beautiful light golden color; light, juicy, and refreshing; not meant for the long haul so enjoy this summer while outside in the heat and look forward to next year’s vintage. — 6 years ago

Glen Manor Vineyards

Hodder Hill Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2010

Absolutely fantastic! At nine years old, this is just hitting the full effect of secondary bottle aging. Black cherries, coffee and liquored raspberries are framed by a simmered redux of eastern & baking spices. Almost as long as it is wide… The acidity is almost fully entwined with the tannins for a near seamless tour d’force. This fella is playing in the same sandbox with RdV’s Lost Mountain...it’s that good! 2 bottles remain in the cellar :) — 5 years ago

Domaine Wilfrid Rousse

Les Puys Chinon Cabernet Franc 2004

You never recognise this one. But that's OK. The label is deceptive. Domaine De Peyra. Les Puys. 2004

There's half a sandbox at the bottom. Wild tanin and cherry go nuts. Almost a little smokey. Then settles with good cheese. I'm still a fan. And I'm down to my last four bottles of peyra! Come visit me if you want to indulge.

Surprisingly evolved for a wine of this vintage. Aromas of elderflower, Salt spray and an Ohio corn field after a summer shower. A bit racy but not overly endowed.

Three Wine Company

Live Oak Contra Costa County Zinfandel 2013

The best Contra Costa Zin I've had. Beautiful nose: ripe blackberry/cassis, sandalwood, baking spices. The mouthfeel is remarkable. So plush. But not jammy at all. In fact seems gravity-defying. Perfectly ripe fruit. Transitions seamlessly to a dark, clingy, pure minerality. Beautifully proportioned and balanced. Matt Cline was mastering sand- based wines well before the trendies who seek Sandlands were making their first trip to the sandbox. (My great dog Zinny is in the background.) — 8 years ago
