100% Syrah from flatter vineyards at the bottom of the slope (between the Route Nationale and the Rhône) and young-vine fruit from hillside vineyards. I believe that there is still upside if this gets a few more years of bottle age, but this vintage is very nice right now if you have one and want to open it up. Classic Syrah nose and palate (olives, violets, smoked meat). Raspberry and dried herb aromatics as well. This isn’t as “rustic” as some other Northern Rhone Syrahs I’ve had lately. This Touriga Nationale blend is medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel. The oak is extremely restrained, so the plum and bright cherry fruits come to the forefront, but there is s slight bitterness to the finish which would make it a superb food wine. — 6 years ago

Old-school red Burgundy by Pierre Bourée et fils, a small négociant house in Gevrey-Chambertin. This wine comes from one of the family’s four own vineyards, the Clos de la Justice, a 2-hectare walled plot located on the eastern side of the Route Nationale 74 (generally considered “the wrong side” of the road. Virtually all of Burgundy’s notable vineyard sites are west of the RN 74). Earthy, rustic. Aromas of red cherries, pepper, forest floor. Fresh, not particularly complex, easy to drink.
