Delaplane Cellars

Reserve Left Bank Merlot Blend 2015

Really lovely earthy, leather, and tobacco notes with some dark fruit (blackberries or black currants). Still has some of that stereotypical VA cab franc honeysuckle bright and yeasty notes. This has cellared well! (43% Merlot, 36% Cab Sauv, 14% Cab Franc, 7% petit Verdot) — 3 days ago

We are identifying this wine.

I don’t normally do Virginia wines and I know why… However, this was serviceable — 19 days ago

Hardscrabble Red Blend 2014

2014 vintage tasted in 11/2018. Dark purple with a bright crimson rim. Very pleasantly pungent aromas of red cherries, smoke, and pepper, something sweetly herbal like freshly crushed sassafras leaves. As it sits in the glass it reveals a softer, rich, cedar-like aroma. A bouquet of impressive depth and complexity. Vibrant acid from the tart red fruit, tannins are young and generous. Roughly 80% cab sauv, with 20% merlot. Modest 12.5% alcohol but don’t let that fool you. This is concentrated, very fragrant, and explosively tasty wine. World class for sure and a wonderful juxtaposition to the ripeness commonly associated with its west-coast counterparts. This is Virginia first-growth if there is such a thing. — 16 days ago

Gadino Cellars

Nebbiolo 2012

Gaddino is one of our favorites and I would put this as an above average but not spectacular vintage. — 11 days ago

Hi Roger, wondering if you have experience with other vintages of their Nebbiolo? I have been interested in trying and wanted to know variations from year to year? ‘12 conditions were seen as “classic” and thus leading to good acidity for Nebbiolo. Any insights are appreciated!

Great Bordeaux and well blended. $150. per bottle is a stretch... — a month ago

North Gate Vineyard

Meritage Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2014

This fella has lot bottle rest ahead...it took a good bit of air to unpack the present inside. True to Mark Fedor’s skill and style, he hit a right bank bullseye again. Year over year, this rivals KingFamily’s meritage program for CONSISTENCY. Wild bramble and forest underlayer elements combine to OVERACHIEVE. At $22, one of the BEST values on the east coast. Is worth noting that there are no fireworks here, just consistent depth of concentration with very clean and functional tannins. It will be interesting to see how Nate shifts the program - as we already see with the wild meadow Chardonnay — a month ago

North Gate Vineyard

Chardonnay 2017

What a difference the designer makes! I assume that Nate was responsible for this vintage and boy is it a start improvement. Stylistically, this mirrors Michael Shaps - and I approve! Mark’s extraction and choice of oak led to a heavy, food awkward profile. This quintessential harvest cycle yields tremendous purity and beauty. Acidity and sweetness have a beautiful dance wrapped in a medium weight mouthfeel. More please!! — a month ago

Williams Gap Red Blend 2013

Really nice, lots of leather and green pepper, some floral honeysuckle type taste and fragrance. Not s lot of fruit, but maybe some dried currant or blueberry. — a month ago
