Lamborghini (La Fiorita)

Campoleone Umbria Sangiovese Merlot 2001

Let’s just get the obvious out of the way: yes, it’s THAT Lamborghini. After Ferruccio retired from building cars and tractors, he bought the La Fiorita estate in Umbria and he took up winemaking. I’ve had the good fortune to enjoy a few different vintages of “Campoleone”, their most serious wine, over the years but it’s often a bit of a challenge to find in the middle of the US. It’s traditionally a 50/50 blend of Sangiovese and Merlot and labeled as an IGT. I had two bottles of the 2001 vintage in my cellar and decided to open one because, why not? As luck would have it, the first one was corked. Might as well open the second! That’s more like it!

Popped and poured a small glass for myself. The 2001 “Campoleone” pours a deep ruby/purple color with an opaque core moving out towards an orange rim; medium+ viscosity with light staining of the tears. Some faint signs of sediment too. On the nose, it seemed a bit reticent so I took Tim Heaton’s lead, based off his fabulous note from back in 2017. Into the decanter it went while I prepared dinner. I ended up leaving about 2oz in the bottle as it was full of sediment; almost a muddy sludge. After about 90 minutes, the nose came alive!

Developing still, after 23 years! Beautiful notes of plums, brambles, purple flowers, leather, tobacco, green herbs and spice drawer. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins (though well integrated at this stage) and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, dry and zippy. What a tasty treat and I can’t underscore how youthful this seemed! Based off this experience, well-stored examples are drinking well now with a 1-2 hour decant or enjoy through 2031 with ease.

@Jonathan Patch 40% gamay, bunch of ancien Shit from the doubs. I'd need to look at my notes but it's a bunch of Shit no one had heard of anyway so fuck it, it's good anyway.

Sounds like a rough translation but yeah I'd go along with that.

Last night with great friends

Ridiculously delicious cab from Napa blend and Realm

I have had three years of past vintages of this wine and amazingly every year it gets better - bravo Benoit and Juan

Just a small decant and bam - color is that dependable stunning purple like a new purple on an exotic Lamborghini

The smell is rich like the feeling you get when smell fresh baked homemade chocolate chip cookies and you were 8 years old

The palette is just stunning - like the stunning feeling I got when my Red Sox won the World Series after losing three games but came back to take the final four games in 2004 - prefection in a bottle

The legs are the sexy stiletto shaped legs for a wine that you could not imagine - Marilyn Monroe would be jealous

Drink it if you got it and if not get it - it might get better over time but why wait - seriously

The earlier vintages I wasn’t impressed with. I’ll have to make sure to grab a more recent one

Vouvray Chenin Blanc 2019

Delicious thick with low acid, apples, chamoy, and almost a lambec beer style funk. Even though I used to work in banking this one reminds me of that hipster girl that might skip a few showers and overcompensate with patchouly oil but watching her smile is like the sun rising and the curves make you want to buy a Lamborghini. Bright, and round in ways that defy Euclidean geometry. Very delicious. — 4 years ago

Crossfire Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Alas, a final hurrah in which to say, “Fare thee well, Del Frisco’s Grille!”
.
As for the wine itself, really delicious and seductively powerful with loads of potential for the coming years. A bit more feminine than the To Kalon, the MH has some finesse and sensual elegance that makes it less of a Lamborghini and more of a Ferrari. Lots of licorice, plum, blackberry, and cassis. I had the waitress pop the cork and pour me a glass for my steak, but I stopped at one glass. I’ll be taking this selection home to see how it evolves over the next day (or two).
.
EDIT: Day two and this wine is on fire 🔥So delicious. Much more balanced; it’s like it knows its own identity now.
