The 2015 ‘Andreas’ is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wine, sourced from the Wallula Vineyard and made by superstar winemaker Giles Nicault. The wine was aged for thirty months in French oak (90% new) prior to bottling. Needing more than an hour in the decanter to be fully expressive, this wine awakens to black raspberry cordial, coffee ground and black tea aromas that impress. Silky smooth, the soft mouthfeel is excellent. The palate shows good richness with mocha, Creme de cassis, anise and red bell pepper flavors with hints of white pepper. Showing more restraint than the 2014 ‘Andreas’ this is a terrific effort in this warm vintage. Drink 2020-2035- 93 — 6 years ago

One doesn’t think of Henschke and outstanding Pinot Noir - at least I didn’t, until I tasted this 2006 from their Lenswood vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. Red cherry and quite luscious on the mid palate. This wine was doing it easily at 18 years of age. Not sure why they don’t concentrate on this more? Perhaps most of their good Pinot material goes into their sparkling wines. — 5 months ago
We had this with a bolognese sauce and it was perfect — 5 years ago
With the Giles and Becks . Smooth and delicious. Acid and tannins really have went way down. Still good fruit. — 7 years ago

The 2017 ‘Saggi’ by Long Shadows is a thrilling follow up to the gorgeous 2016 bottling. A blend of mainly Sangiovese (59%) with smaller portions Cabernet Sauvignon (24%) and Syrah (17%), the ‘Saggi’ is truly a one of a kind wine made by the talented Giles Nicault. Needing a one hour decant to be fully aroused, the ‘Saggi’ shows lovely smoky tones that meld with red cherry preserves, leather and underbrush aromatics that all build in the glass. The palate is silky and soft, with a bright sense of minerality and wonderful texture. You are greeted to a rich core of red fruits that dance with citrus rind accents, milk chocolate and damp stone tones on the palate. Showing wonderful length and elegance, the 2017 ‘Saggi’ is wonderful to enjoy in its youth and will provide drinking enjoyment over the next ten to fifteen years. Drink 2020-2033- 94 — 5 years ago

Henschke is better known for its stellar old vine Shiraz like Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone and others. I didn’t realise that they made a Pinot Noir until I went to the Henschke master class weekend with Steven and Pru Henschke. This comes from the Lenswood vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. This wine has a lovely red fruited nose with a toffee note. The palate shows a dirty strawberry on the light to medium weight palate but exhibits mid palate intensity carrying its 18 years of age with ease. I should find out if Henschke have persisted with the style because it is excellent but I don’t see it offered anywhere. — 3 months ago
