Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
This was a good decision. Cork was dry and broke up but after filtering and decanting there were great ageing Cabernet aromas right from the outset. Initially some raisiny flavours masking the fruit and depth but after an hour this was top notch. Loads of dark fruit and baking spice with oak and lavender. The palate is strong but smooth and a delicate floral note appeared after a time. Nicely mature and well worth tasting if you find a bottle from this vintage. — 5 years ago

Consisting of 69% Zinfandel, 23% Petite Sirah, 6% Carignane & 2% Mataro (Mourvèdre), this red blend has always been a long-standing favorite of mine: Smooth & complex, rich & juicy. Always delivers time & time again. Whenever I see it on a menu, the decision is made easy. All in all, a more than impressive Zinfandel blend; a fantastic wine selection. Great day to all! 2019 vintage. Blaye. Biodynamically farmed. A blend of Sauvignon 45%, Sémillon 45% and Colombard 10%. Light golden. White stone fruit and honey. Very ripe and round, I can see why they've added the Colombard this year (usually it's 50/50 Sauvignon/Sémillon).A wise decision to add acidity to the blend, in order to keep the fatness in check. Similar notes to 7 months ago in September 2021. Comparing with the Pinot Gris from Dry River in Martinborough NZ. I found this to be musky with intense pear and apricot notes. Both were luscious with low acid and both finished dry. Not much in it but I gave the decision narrowly to the Dry River because of it’s brighter new world fruit. — 2 years ago

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 1990
1990 vintage. An under the radar Pomerol, bought in 1961 by the grandfather of current owner Nathalie Despagne. He also owned La Tour Figeac in Saint-Emilion and La Rose Figeac is just across the Saint-Emilion border. The 4,56 hectare vineyard consists of 9 parcels (all within 500 m of each other) on gravelly sandy soils and is planted with Merlot (90%) and Cabernet Franc. My bottle had a near-perfect level and as the smell was a bit musty upon opening, but there was still good fruit in the mouth and the colour looked very solid, I took the risk to decant it. It turned out to be a wise decision as the wine evolved positively, even if the tannins remained a bit rustic. On the other hand it still has lively fruit and freshness, it is a testimony to the ageing potential of Bordeaux wines and an attractive food wine. Abv. 12,8% . — 2 years ago

Roero D.O.C.G. Arneis Bricco delle Ciliegie Giovanni Almondo 2017. 100% Arneis. There’s a takeout joint a block from home that makes cheap, quality Chinese-American food served in styrofoam containers. I go there maybe once a month as a convenient pleasure. I don’t imagine the Almondo family intended for me to pair this crisp, vibrant wine with an order of lemon chicken, but that’s exactly what I did and I stand by my decision. #GiovanniAlmondo @moorebrotherswinecompany — 5 years ago

2020 vintage. This estate was known only for its sweet Maury wines when it was purchased in 1999 by Olivier Decelle. As sweet wines were (and still are) not in vogue, he started to also produce dry wines. A wise decision, as showcased by this gorgeous entry level Côtes de Roussillon. A Grenache- Syrah-Carignan blend from slate soils featuring an attractive nose with black fruits, spices and a distinctive minerality that is the hallmark of this wine. Crisp and pure fruit in the mouth, with a soft tannic bite and a long mineral-spicy finish. Fantastic value for 10 euros. — a year ago
