Lorenzo Accomasso

Riserva Barolo Nebbiolo 2011

Lorenzo Accomasso, a man whose wines I have long wanted to experience. He carried the reputation as being the ultimate traditionalist; a man after my own heart! While such a title is certainly defensible, he was once considered a bit of an innovator. Lorenzo was green harvesting in the mid-1970’s, long before the practice was accepted in Barolo. This bottle, confirmed what I have long expected: I would love this wine and wish that I had better access. Alas, the production was microscopic and sadly, Lorenzo passed last year at the ripe age of 91.

Opened about two hours prior to service; enjoyed over the course of two days. Consistent throughout with very little evolution. The 2011 Riserva, a blend of Accomasso’s holdings, pours a deep garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with dark fruited notes of Morello cherries, pomegranate, tar, roses, talcum powder, ground cumin, dried green herbs and gravelly earth. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose, the finish is long and the 15% ABV is almost imperceptible. This is a rustic, soulful Barolo by a true master and perfect pairing with the duo of Colorado and Japanese A5 Wagyu. Bravissimo! Drink now with patience through 2061.

Thierry Allemand

Chaillot Cornas Syrah 2009

2009 Allemand Horizontal. I absolutely love Allemand’s wines. Always a seamless combination of both elegance and power. Both the Chaillot and Reynard showed perfectly, with the Reynard a bit more concentrated and deep than the Chaillot. Both wines had superb intensity, focus and a wonderful texture with the signature liquid rock, violets, herbs and cassis of Allemand Cornas. Fantastic duo. — 6 years ago

Crown Point

Estate Selection Red Blend 2014

Shay A
9.2

Earlier this week, a rep for Crown Point wines hosted a tasting to show off a few of their newer releases. New to me, they are out of Santa Barbara and have the duo of Adam Henkel (former assistant winemaker at Harlan for 8yrs) and Philippe Melka (who came on starting with the ‘15 vintage) making the wines.

This wine is their Estate Selection, which is 73% cab, 16% malbec and 11% merlot. I believe this was the first vintage for this wine. It sports a very soft profile and is made in a riper style. Aromatically it smells of baked boysenberry, fig and mixed berry pie with milk chocolate chips. The ABV is around 15.2% and it shows here. Extracted on the palate with chocolate covered dark fruits, baking spices, nutmeg and Andes mint.

@David T : No, I don’t recall. I do believe they mentioned that the winery they purchased used to be Westerley wines...

Guys steak night bottle numero duo.. another solid napa cab. The most fruit forward of the bottles, not tannic, maybe too much fruit for me but hits well with the steak. — 9 years ago

Premier Rouge Reserve Red Blend 2017

Le Macchiole

Scrio Toscana Syrah 2013

Wonderfull duo from Le Macchiole. The Paleo (100% Cab Franc) is driven on horsepower and is quite intense while the Scrio (100% Syrah) is somewhat more elegant and smoother. Both fantastic wines! — 7 years ago

Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Domaine du Pech

La Badinerie du Pech Buzet Red Bordeaux Blend 2011

I must compliment Delectable’s computer vision algo here - such a blur photo and it took only a second to correctly identify the wine! For me, this was the better of the 2011 duo in our line-up. More complexity and purer, with intense black fruits lifted by a lick of VA. Not my kind of wine, but an interesting data point in our blind line-up. — 4 years ago

Aubert

Sugar Shack Chardonnay 2014

Had a guest today at FF. Showed him the list of chards, to which he said "That one should be drinking well." And, voila. Here we are. This Sugar Shack Chardonnay arguably outdrank its 2014 Ritchie Chard by just about a point. A little less sweetness, a little less salinity, a little more balance than the Ritchie. Ripe peach, pear, plantain with a little bit of dried herb. It has been about 15 months since I've had this one. Lots of yellow fruits and that Classic Aubert backbone. You sorta forget about other Chards when a duo of 2014 Aubert are on the table, and this was no exception tonight. — 7 years ago

Domaine du Grand Tinel

Alexis Establet Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grenache 2010

This was a really fun follow up to the duo of 2010 Saint-Damien’s. Same consulting wine maker (P. Cambie). Consistent with my previous experiences with this wine, it was beguiling from the start. Lush, amazing example of Grenache with brambles for days and while that sounds like this is massively fruit forward (and it is) it’s just so pure that you can’t help but fall head over heals for it. Sadly, all good things must come to an end and this was my last bottle. Tremendous. — 8 years ago
