Château Montviel, Pomerol 2019 All-saints lunch at home with the in-laws. This was poured along a cassoulet (well, high-quality canned cassoulet bought in France this summer and brought back in the trunk of our car). The nose shows tar, cigar box, damp, freshly moved earth in a field, dark cherries, blackcurrant, blackberries. The palate is well balanced. Strong acid drive, nice cherries and black currant notes all along, some width, some weight, a spherical mid palate with tannins. These tannins disturb the overall mouthfeel, which was soft and rounded, as expected for a merlot-dominant blend from Pomerol, by adding a drying layer over a long, blackcurrant and cherries finish that goes on for a while. Some tar notes and a bitter touch blossom in the very end. I don't drink Pomerol wines very often, but I'm always satisfied when I do. It's always reliable and even if it's not always great, there is always a nice story in the glass. 90 out of 100. — a day ago
