Scarpa (Antica Casa Vinicola Scarpa)

La Selva di Moirano Monferrato Freisa 2006

Starts out reticent, and without fruit. Lots of leather, earth, tar and some fruit leather. The fruit grows and becomes like a plum coulis, maybe strawberry balsamic jam, but never becomes really fruity. The nose is sweet, but the palate is not. Mint and baking spice come out on the nose. Tannins need to be mentioned here, they are there in every sip. Really long and "rustic" tannins. This needs to be drunk with food. By the time it opened up, my food was gone. Really powerful nose, purple flowers are coming on, violets and even lillies. Good acids. Dark purple color, darker than most examples of its relative Nebbiolo.

Dolcetto di Moirano 1998

Very musky wine with deep hints of forest mud and mushrooms. — 17 days ago

Bric du Nota Nebbiolo d'Alba 2016

Lovely albeit relatively high-end Nebbiolo. Slightly less smoky than our tasting pair, the Oddero Langhe. Also, much more typical cherry rhubarb grip, and for some, this could pass as a Cru Barolo. Will buy again. — 2 months ago

I love campanian whites, a lot of them are so smoky and dense/clean. Never had this grape yet, anything special about the taste?

@Chris Shultz I’ve had this wine before but it was a while ago. Probably 2012 or 13. This 2018 impressed me because, unlike what I remember, it showed delicate floral notes and subtle but unmistakable persistence. I wouldn’t say there’s a lot of density or energy but definitely clean and surprisingly layered. My impression of previous vintages was more of the classic ashy notes of Campania.

Sauvignon Blanc / Vista do Café 2017

A very interesting white wine from Brazil: a light bodied sauvignon blanc with good minerality and great balance. — 18 days ago

Frias Lanzarote Listan Blanco 2018

I’ve had very mixed experiences with wine from the Canary Islands one day they taste delicious and then the next they are on the stinky side which some attribute to the volcanic soil... but this one is definitely one of the best I’ve had. Very Chablis like (immense minerality) with just a little bit of a reductive nose. Delish with chirashi 😋🍣 — a month ago

Le Coste di Monforte Barolo Nebbiolo

Very much enjoyed but something held it back from loving. I think it lacked a little richness to be really a top notch wine. That being said had a mild sweetness and bite and will definitely get again. — a month ago
