Bodegas Maurodos Cartago 2012 D.O. Toro, paired with a serious veal chop, roasted piquillos, thick-cut chef-grown potato chips, and tomatoes at Chibo. Brand new wine for the winery coming from a single plot of old vines and named for a landmark curve of the Duero river. 90% Tinta de Toro and 10% Touriga Naçional, aged 3 years in 100% new French oak and 1 year in the bottle. Dusty red fruits (plum, rhubarb) on the nose, medium-dark red, medium+ body, nice acidity out of the gate, mellowing into a nice balance of a little sweetness and a little sourness, more plum, some raspberry, bit of bramble on the finish. — 8 days ago

Poured into a decanter about an hour prior to service; no formal notes due to the setting. It has been a few years since I last enjoyed the 2015 and I am happy to report that it is now very much open for business. The fruit is on full display and the oak is much better integrated. The structure is still quite firm but I found everything to be in better balance than it was upon release. This is squarely and its drinking window and should remain that way through the remainder of this decade and likely, well beyond. Drink now through 2030+ — 3 months ago
