Robert Biale Vineyards

R.W. Moore Vineyard Zinfandel 2010

Nose has charred cherry, dried blackberry, dehydrated cranberry, old wet leather, dried blueberries, saturated cedar plank and crushed fresh blueberries.

Palate has ripe/dried blueberries, light creamy oak, dark chocolate, dried strawberry, strawberry jam, rioevblackberry, violets and wet garden soil.

Finish is forever, tannins are velvet Elvis! I can't believe I'm commiting this to actual notes, but this might be the best Biale bottle we've ever had, and it's hard to top the equal vintage from the Monte Rosso vineyard. MR is dear to my heart from most producers, but this is epic. At peak enjoyment at only 11yo! Decanted 5H.

Had a 12 Carlisle RR Carlisle Vineyard. Great fruit, soft earth, elegant but lacked some pizzazz until it had two plus hours in the decanter.

Cellers de Scala Dei

Prior Priorat Grenache Blend 2016

A wine slightly discombobulated yet obviously finding-its-way. It’s an old soul who is still young and wants to be Courtney Love. Like it’s not damaged but it has enough edge to aspire. Earth of old world and ridic ripeness from those llicorella soils. A very red Garnacha. Don’t know how it will age but think it has a little while to get all the flavors to make friends. Either way a wine with interest. — 3 years ago

Jade Mountain

Paras Vineyard Mt. Veeder Syrah 2002

Nose has ripe blackberry, blackberry jam, fruit Roll-up, dried meats, iodine (?), wet leaves, toasted pistachio, fresh violet, wet leather and dark chocolate chunks.

Palate has raspberry jam, dried blackberry, black currant jam, wet leather, dehydrated black cherry, moist cigar and mild tannins persist.

A great showing on this bottle tonight, proof positive on the pedigree of the vineyard. This should age gracefully for the next 8-10Y without concern.

Camus Pere & Fils

Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2005

Nose has dried grape vines, (old) neutral oak barrel, dried black cherry, dried garden soil, (cooled) grilled tomato, graphite mechanical pencil refills, old coffee grounds and very dry compost/soil.

Palate has dried cherries resurrected in bacon fat, several day old sliced fresh cherries, blend of moist/dry soil with medium tannins. Cork pulled for a slow ox. for ~6h, then decanted ~1h. Picking up some since decanting, but still not moving the needle much. Likely great 5+ years ago, acceptable this evening.

Paired to a local pig, grilled pork chops from our favorite just over the border farmer (Highland Farm, Old Chatham, NY). Courtney only raises about six pigs every year, I'm overjoyed when we land some for our freezer, delicious factor 2x over just about anything else in the region.
(Pork was 93 points, if I had been more observant on internal temps would have been 95 points, still grilled to a wonderful medium.)

@Daniel Maquin I'm just generally perplexed by these bottles, seems like every third one is a definite winner. I keep buying them in hopes I strike a good run at some point.

@Daniel Maquin @Severn Goodwin I would think based on vintage the ‘05 is the one you would wait on and ‘ 09 the one you would feel less hesitant to open given the flamboyance of the vintage..

Carneros Pinot Noir 2019

Well balanced smooth Pinot without the funk that turns me off in a lot of Pinots. I’d drink again. — 3 months ago

Napa Valley Rosé of Pinot Noir 2020

This has never been Carneros, just Napa Valley. Vibrant pink. Inviting nose and medium palate of rose and red cherry with a touch of seltzer on the moderate finish. Medium plus acidity. Another triumph from Courtney Benham. Plenty of fruit balanced by juicy acidity and earthy floral overtones. Ready for summer fare and summer sipping. Drink now I either situation. — 3 months ago

Carneros Rosé of Pinot Noir 2018

Bright salmon rose. Abundant (even when cold) earthy nose of musty cherry and the dreaded forest floor. Medium palate echoes the nose with a bit more red cherry and raspberry. More earthy than the typical California rosé. Add in the medium plus acidity and you have a rosé that’s made for food as well as summertime sipping. Drink now, of course. Or wait for next summer’s release. — 8 months ago
