Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

2016 opened July 2021. Still a little too young for it’s maximum potential IMHO. Leather and loam on the nose. Distinct cherry fruit on the front. Heavy tannic structure — more so than the average Bordeaux — and more so than the most of the Margauxs I’ve had. The tannins kick in on the mid palate. They’re velvety (With a lot of complexity that might be revealed in few years). Unfortunately some sour high notes appear at the mid palate and amplify themselves to the end of the pallet. Very much sour cherries. But this wine redeems itself by having a long but subtle mineral finish. I might retry this wine in three or four years. I can’t give it a better score than 9.1 right now, though. But I might’ve the score in 2024 or 2025. Hopefully, I’ll have a personal jet pack by that time. But heavens no, I won’t drink and fly. — 8 days ago

53 Ch Kirwan : glorious medium bodied rose colour obviously with browning at meniscus but still looking in super shape for a wine of this age. Classically cool crisp Bordeaux nose , the bouquet of rose, a hint of "terroir" (Brett) ; lively (!) entry, flavours of rose , bramble berry , lovely touch of fruit sweetness (!) long flavours dancing thanks to beautiful natural acidity. Classic Margaux commune. A beauty.

Probably a better wine that the bretty 2011 Kirwan I had difficulty drinking last week; hard to spend money on faulty wine #brett #badwinehygiene #freshwineisbetter

Hi Pete, yes, just the slightest "whiff " but nothing at all nasty of horsehair, angularity etc. really quite fine. Was a VG level bottle and it was under the then owners banner Schroder & schyler.

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1981

Chateau Kirwan 1981. Smoky jalapeño kind of reminds of mescal. Lots decaying leaves and dirt, old leather, with a hint of oxidation on the nose. The tannins and acid held up quite well for 34 year old Bordeaux from a cooler vintage. — 6 years ago
