Bodegas Fuenmayor

La Rioja Alta

Reserva Viña Ardanza Rioja Tempranillo Garnacha 2009

Nice $30.00 Tempranillo

235, The Wine Advocate

The current vintage of one of the flagship wines from La Rioja Alta is the 2009 Viña Ardanza Reserva, the second year it has contained 20% Garnacha grapes from their estate vineyards in La Pedriza in the village of Tudelilla in Rioja Baja. The Tempranillo comes from vineyards averaging 30 years of age in Fuenmayor and Cenicero. The hand-harvested bunches were sorted and put in boxes, transferred to the winery at 14 degrees Celsius to be destemmed and crushed, then the grapes fermented in stainless steel, including malolactic. The two varieties were aged separately, 36 months in used American oak barrels for Tempranillo and 30 months for Garnacha, and racked every six months. I

Bodega Contador

Carmen Hilara Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2008

Needs time to open, and probably a bit too young. But once open, excellent with a long finish, good acid, and a full mouthfeel. Had at Asador Alameda in Fuenmayor. — 9 years ago

Smooth, fruit-forward, nice finish of spice - floral on the nose

Dominio de Nobleza

Rioja Tempranillo 2016

This wine from one of the 20 wineries in Fuenmayor is well balanced. On the one hand its pronounced tannins to enjoy a spicy dish, on the other 24 months in barrels soften its tones and give it personality. Excellent to enjoy this May Day at the Mariquitina Festival.

Bodegas Fuenmayor

Rioja 1954

Slightly musty nose of dried rose, plum, sour cherry. Lovely depth on the palate with dark fruit, some soured notes a touch of Madeira and a slightly drying finish. This has been open for over a week, so it’s holding up remarkably well for a wine of this age. Lovely stuff- a testament to the ageability of rioja. — 6 years ago

Bodegas Montecillo

Viña Cumbrero Crianza Rioja Tempranillo 2010

Founded by Celestino Navajas in 1874 in the town of Fuenmayor in Spain's Rioja Alta region, the major and most traditional winemaking region in Spain. Deep red with berry fruit and spice aromas. Cherry and plum with savory tannins, smooth texture on lingering finish ending with slight earthy tones. Nice value! — 7 years ago

astounding. quite literally knocked my nose, palate and perceptions to humility and back. a half century old wine that was bright, lively, yet wondrously woven with earthy maturity and knowledge. a moment I'd like to experience again and again and again. yes. — 10 years ago
