The Alchemist Syrah Blend 2009

Drinking absolutely perfectly right now. Had a tasting with Eric a few years back who said he prefers his wines within the first few years, but I have to say that virtually every Booker wine I’ve had (save for the whites and roses) have improved substantially with a few more years in the cellar. We last had this in 2015, and it is substantially better now. At this stage I don’t think it’s going to improve much going forward, but it is terrific right now (so drink ‘em if ya got ‘em!). — a month ago

I watched a virtual interview with him where he compared his wines against other high end wineries (SQN, Saxum, etc). He pointed out their use of whole cluster and said he doesn’t want to imitate them as he doesn’t want to compete against them (his friends). Because of that, he goes to a different style (which normally allows it to be more accessible at a younger age). We all have our own preferences, but I thought that was a unique standpoint, and I respected it.

@Jim McCusker : Good point. I haven’t tried all of Booker’s wines, but whenever I have, they’ve been consistently good (sometimes really good) and that’s certainly rare. I have a 2017 Tempranillo I’m very excited to try at some point.

This is insanely complex. Just tons of flavor and again awesome malt backbone similar to heady. Tart grapefruit, limes, with a bread like quality. Then big bitterness like orange rind and pine sap. Makes my mouth water. — 10 months ago

Woah. New go to beer alert for that crisp rice style beer I encountered backpacking all over Southeast Asia in my early 20s.

Airy, light, crisp, slight pear afternote. None of the weird malty aftertaste you sometimes get with these. Love it for classic, simple style beer to go with sushi or fried chicken.

Guinness Foreign Extra Stout

So very class! Black as space, with a nebula of chestnut. Rides high, but dismounts to palomino stars and bubble islands. Swirl it and it stacks right back up! Witchy runes and dismembered arms clutching axes narrate the lacing. Pecan and hazelnut, charred caramel, bitter chocolate and black bread with burnt caraway and salted licorice! That’s just the nose. Medium mouthfeel drops pure dark chocolate to coat the tongue, blackened brittle, a treacle touch that hardens like toffee over rye. Fine coffee, black, but home from the pub smelling of vanilla, a bitter bout with chit and chicory, but nutty like baked walnut atop a brownie. Delicious stuff! Glad I revisited! Just the balm to soothe a weathered soul in a time of crisis. Cheers!
