Spoto Wines

Amber Knolls Vineyard Pedro's Block Malbec 2018

@Delectable Wine this is Pedro's Block Malbec. .. It was not in the DBase.... Spent some time with this new 18 Vintage of Spoto's Malbec from Pedro's Block. A delightful, very youthful wine that will appreciate quite a bit in the next 1-2 years. The wine poured a ruby red / crimson into the glass. Nose was divided about 50% floral with lilac, jasmine, and rose petal and balanced nicely with sweet red plums, red candied applies. But, had a very volcanic kind of quality to it. The deeper the huff, the more you started to get a faint background of herbs. The entry is medium+ to full bodied red-fruited wine. Under-ripe sweet youthful tart red cherries and red plums. As it sits on the mouthfeel, a cherry cola note develops and the herbal quality of this starts to show. Finishes with a lot of acidic character, and fair amount of tannin. After a couple of hours, almost a graham cracker note came into the picture. This is not your purple fruited malbec, it is WAY more interesting than that. But I think the best is yet to come. Optimal drinking 2022-2032. Rating today is 90+, with potential for 93/94 in the next 3-4 years. — 14 days ago

Quinto Malbec 2014

May be the age on the bottle talking, but this Malbec is singing! Medium purple on the eye with heavy blackberry and plum on the nose. On the pallet the full body is immediately apparent, some ripe dark fruit also present, chocolate and oak as well. The tannings are strong, nice balance to the wine and there is a pleasant finish. Bought this about five years ago and it is certainly a pleasant surprise. Again, lesson learned: never underestimate aging value wines, this is great. — 6 days ago

La Fage Cahors Malbec 2015

A still young Cahors with round and powerful tannins as one would expect from this appellation. Nose of black fruits, prune, eucalyptus, fresh ink, smoke, chalk, graphite. The body of the wine is generous and round. The finish is correct without extravagance. Will age favorably with a few years in the cellar.

Catena Mendoza Malbec 2017

An iconic Argentine wine; probably the most well-known Malbec for that matter. Big producer, a great one at that, who’s focused on quality. There’s oak, blueberry, plum and leather. You get a slight silkiness with good tanning structure, somewhat refined. Outstanding value, one of the best under twenty dollar wines I’ve had. — 21 days ago

Smoking good. Really tight and reserved on opening, smoky, spicy, with a blanket of graphite, earth and herbs that took some time to unravel. The core of the wine was sensational - high toned, intense and hyper focused dark cherry and plum, with the herbs and spice notes still there, adding depth. Beautifully vivid and super expressive. So good with chocolate cake... — 22 days ago

Cachapoal Valley Malbec 2018

Yum! Another hidden gem found at TJ’s. Didn’t think it was super with the first sip but after aeration and the second sip, YUM! Bold, thick, dry, fruit and tobacco notes but not a fruity wine. Good after taste and no bitterness. Will buy again! — 4 days ago
