Ramón Bilbao has always been one of our all-time favourite wines. Not too expensive and perfect for any occasion. The 2010 wine growing cycle was very good and the harvest benefitted from the sunny weather. This Rioja has an intense dark red colour. It is very elegant and with good balance in the mouth that leads to a long and pleasant finish. Ideal with red meats or just some tapas. A nice value for the quality level! — 10 years ago

Matarromera is a treat from Spain, an intensely dark cherry-red wine with purple glints. On the nose it's great and intense with flower and red fruit fragance. Medium-bodied on the palate, balanced with a clean natural acidity and a lingering finish. Perfect for any occasion. — 10 years ago

This Turkish red wine from the Island of Tenedos is an uncommon blend of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Rich, complex and very elegant with aromas of black fruit, tobacco and dark chocolate. Very long and rounded finish. Perfect with red meat. Highly recommended. — 10 years ago

Last Friday we had this fantastic red, another treat from our last visit to Spain. A 2008 vintage Gran Reserva full of flavour, fruit aromas and a long and persistent finish. Just perfect for any occassion and very inexpensive. One of our all-time favourite Tempranillos! — 10 years ago

This week’s choice is the Peruvian Intipalka, Valle del Sol, 2012. The fruit flavours in this Tannat are quite different from what we’re used to. Deep red, almost black. Intense on palate with a smooth earthy finish. Very nice with red meat. — 10 years ago
