Xanadu Wines
Stevens Road Margaret River Chardonnay
Another modern style Chardonnay like the Nanny Goat from Otago had a few days ago. The 2nd of 2 premium Chardonnays from Xanadu - the other being the Reserve. Glenn Goodall the winemaker says the main difference between the 2 is that the Stevens Road has an “oyster shell “ character which I get. Also a saline, mineral note. The next night some delicious white peach notes. Oak is perfectly balanced (25% new Barriques). Could cellar for another 5 years if so desired.

Margs is renowned for its Sem/Sav and Cabernets but the Chardy is world class also.

Bright lemon yellow and spotlessly clean in appearance. Nose a little closed. More citrus than stone fruit on the palate- slightly waxy texture with medium minus acid. Built for the long haul when made. Great to see in a very well made Margaret River Chardonnay. Could still enjoy this in 2 or 3 years time. Xanadu has been exhibiting well in the last several years on the Australian Show Circuit. Drank my last bottle on 11th January 2021, 43 weeks after the note above. Consistent notes, great to have a mature Margaret River Chardonnay from a good producer. Made in the leaner style ( compared to Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay) and probably picked a little earlier. A good balance between citrus and stone fruit such as nectarine.

Mar 14th, 2020Funky mealy aromas with evidence of Lees stirring. Taut and lean with oak in the background. No malolactic fermentation keeping this wine steely with citric acid and grapefruit flavours to the fore. If there’s a hot winery in Margaret River currently it’s Xanadu - winning Gold Medals and Trophies for both its Reds and its Whites on the Australian Show Circuit.

Mar 17th, 2019Very youthful for a 14 yo wine. Puts many older burgs to shame!! No premox here.
