Drunk over three nights. Nice enough but didn't have that invigorating, life-giving lift that you hope for in a good wine. Will it get better? Was it in a dumb phase? Who knows.

The final wine at the Downs Club Filipino Dinner on Wednesday night - the mystery wine. This was a rich full bodied red from Coonawarra ( atypical for most Shiraz from this region) and I incorrectly picked McLaren Vale. This had a closed latent brooding nose and should have had a longer decant I feel. Ripe black fruits with some liquorice and plenty of tannin. This has a long way to go to achieve some nuance and detail. A whopper for a Coonawarra Shiraz.

At the Wynns tasting at the Downs Club with chief winemaker Sue Hodder prior to their Annual Release on Wynnsday as it is known. This is their premium Shiraz from Coonawarra. Very closed and dense. I don’t believe it was decanted and it should have been. Has huge potential and an excellent wine but just not my thing compared to the stellar John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon. Both priced the same at $120.

Expected more; a little sharp and unforgiving.
