Feb 29th, 2024A stunning showing and 16 might be the best vintage ever at Walter. Nose is late season cherries, some framing oak, spice, tobacco, stunning minerality and just endless depth. So floral and complex. I could smell this all day. Smells like elite NSG right now. Palate is just amazing. Ridiculous dark cherry fruit that is so crunchy, fresh and concentrated. Wow this is so precise and succulent. Insane balance and hidden power. What depth and length. Amazing stuff in that it’s so silky and juicy and sweet and the oak is already so well integrated on the palate. This has sexy, velvety tannins and an amazingly long finish. 9.5 now but this will go higher.

Jun 22nd, 2023Gorgeous nose of violets, deep soppy cherries. some toasty oak well integrated and darker berries as well. A wafting nose. Palate is silky and juicy and much better integrated than last time with insane tiny berry fruit complexity and wonderful purity and freshness. Awesome balance and showing great finesse and class. Great freshness and so linear.

Nose has burning vines, charred black cherry, wet garden soil, decaying leaves and cooled bacon.
Palate has sweet & tart cherries, dried black currant, spicy tannins with granite-like minerality.
Bottled under Stelvin closure, opened for slow oxidation 6H, then decanted 2H, more time appreciated.

Okay, here we go! 13 is amazing in Burgstadt for Pinot. Gorgeous nose, wow. Stunning violets. Just sick sick violets. So expansive, vivid and clean. Unreal spice and has insane breadth. Just so so so good. Not sure when I had last but wow has it improved. Wow. This is some nose. Endless and expansive. 9:5. Wow. What purity, elegance sweetness and depth. A knockout. So balanced and deep. Complex, juicy and ethereal. This is the best non Hundsruck Spätburgunder I’ve ever had from Walter. It’s so sensual and seductive while being seductive, mineral and complex. A staggering bottle.

Feb 26th, 2021Terrific, lifted nose. Gorgeous cherries that are ethereal like nothing else. So so lifted. Just intoxicating. Moss, tree bark, firm vein of minerality and just glorious Pinot. Hoisin and soy sauce after some air. Even a hit of honey. Stunning lifted aromas that just get better and better. Palate is so elegant and juicy with silky/velvety caressing fruit and just melting and juicy tannins. So complex and complete. Terrific freshness and purity. Terrific sweetness and man those tannins and so, ripe, fine and delineated. Superb. Years to go. But accessible like the Hundsruck. As this airs it gets so much sweeter. My god this is good.
With 15 minutes of air this goes to 9.5 from 9.4.

Juicy and complex with a firm mineral spine but gets more plush after 45 minutes. 08 is a firm vintage as it is but I still love this wine in this vintage. It’s firm yet focused and so fresh and energetic.

Nov 15th, 2020Awesome nose. Ash, bunt tree bark, ripe and secondary berry fruit. Floral. Dampen and dried leaves, so feral, loads of earthy sweetness. So good. Juicy, elegant and structured with wonderful purity as freshness. Even a bit tight and coiled up. Needs 45 minutes to an hour.
