A native grape of Rioja, Tinta Maturana, only allowed by the DOCa as a permitted variety since 2007. Dark and fleshy, liquorice, raisin and a hint of vanilla. Not subtle but juicy big and spicy. Somewhat reminiscent of a Nero d'Avola

Could have used some decanting. It was reduced and had a fair amount of pencil lead. It fortunately opened up and revealed a very nice profile of bramble and coconut. Quite acidic
