Tyrrell's Wines
Rufus Stone Heathcote Shiraz
Dark ruby in color with medium intensity and a wide brick rim.
On the nose plums, blueberries, raspberries, wood, light vanilla, tobacco, vegetables, earth, wet leaves, herbs and barnyard.
Medium plus in body with medium acidity and long, long legs.
Dry on the palate with raspberries, cherries, strawberries, earth, vegetables, wood, river rocks, spices, peppercorn and smoke.
Medium minus on the finish with fine grained tannins and tart cherries.
This Australian Shiraz is still drinkable, but over the hill by now. Unbalanced with mild complexity and a soft mouthfeel. The tart finish wasn't for me. Lost much of its fruitiness and it is much earthier than I expected it to be.
Needed an hour to open up properly and remove most of the barnyard smell. This was probably very nice a couple of years ago.
I paired it with soft and hard cheeses.
14% alcohol by volume.
$22.

Jan 15th, 2017Not heavily extracted, no jam, easy on the alcohol. Thank you Tyrrell's: doing it right for 150 years. Think smoked meat, minerals, blackberry. Great acid, long finish.

Nov 8th, 2016Not overly ripe like the Kilikanoon. More restrained and spicy with earthy/mineral notes. In balance - medium to full bodied - not a Heathcote blockbuster.

Jun 8th, 2016Typical full bodied Heathcote Shiraz Earthy notes with noticeable mineral as well. Not overly complex but a good value hearty glass of red. 16.5+.

Apr 16th, 2015Robust, big Shiraz hitting the tape at 14.9. But had jammy fruit uncontaminated by oak.

Mar 6th, 2021Ripe plums, blackberries, and blueberries, with lots of savory spices and just a little cigar tobacco. Medium strong acidity and integrated tannins. This was well balanced and very yummy.
