Thorn-Clarke
Cool Woods South Australia Shiraz
I recently have an urge to discover more Aussie wines so this is the first of a probable longer serie.
And to start that journey, what could be best than a big bold shiraz?
The fruit is lovely in this one but there's a bit too much oak influence for my taste. Or maybe the oak influence hasn't yet been fully integrated. Intense blackberry and black pepper and that vanilla oaky touch which is very vivid at this stage and tends to take up all the stage. The palate shows typical varietal traits with a big bright blackberry note all over the place, some width, some weight and that rather thick mouthfeel that changes slightly in the end with a tannic wall that's partly generated by the oak influence in my opinion, leaving a typical drying layer over a blackberry and peppery finish. I believe it's an inexpensive, entry level shiraz from south Australia (without any more information on its geographical origin) made in a style which might be considered a crowd pleaser. Not really my cup of tea despite a lovely fruit.
