Somek Estate Winery
Carignan
Dark inky in color with a purple rim.
Beautiful on the nose with white flowers, cherries, currants, oak, vanilla, earth and licorice.
Full bodied and elegant with nice legs and medium acidity.
Fruity on the palate with currants, sweet cherries, figs, Oak, Earth, black pepper and spices.
Long finish with round tannins, cherries and spices.
This is a nice and elegant wine. Great by itself. Will be even better in 3 to 5 years. I really liked the nose on this one. This was good right out of the bottle.
This small winery makes this 100% Carignan red wine, from a 40 year old vineyard that is never watered or touched. Aged for 24 months in French oak barrels and then 24 months in the bottle.

Very deep robe. Took a while to open up and seemed closed and dumb the first day. Much better a day later, the nose blossoming with black fruit, sweet spice, even a hint of incense. Very clean though, zero Brett. Leathery tannins and pretty high acidity make this into a food wine, lacking just a bit of fruit weight on the mid-palate to be enjoyed on its own. It can age, but I don't know for how long will the fruit hold.

Dec 13th, 2020Somek winery. 2 years in barrel, 2 in bottle. Not like wine on its own. Maybe better with food. Very straightforward.

Jul 17th, 2020Raisins on the nose, masking that 14%. The longer it decants the better, it's way more complex after two hours. Jammy grapes, leathery, a little chocolate. Strong, balanced tannins. Good with food. There's some good stuff in Israel!
