Shafer Vineyards
Hillside Select Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

My brother in-law,Bob, standing next to me in blue brought this beauty to the party last night: 2010 Shafer Hillside Select.
What an incredibly well made wine with nuances and layers which seemed endless! We kept talking about this wine all night! What a great side by side comparison it was against the 2009 Chateau L'Evangile! 100 point Bourdeaux & 100 point Cali !!!
I picked up a super faint nose of petrol which intrigue the hell out of me all night! It was awesomeness in a glass!! The palate was gorgeous with highlights of dark fruit, vanilla and a little bit of minerality which was perfectly intertwined into the body of this beauty. The finish was long and strong.
Thank you Bob for sharing this beauty from your cellar in celebration of Christine's Birthday!!

Best red I've ever had, circa 1/2018 w BEP. How every cab should taste: Subtle, complex, but never overpowering

Feb 20th, 2019Out of all the wines in the lineup, the 01 Caymus SS was my favorite, followed by the 87 and 88 Mondavi Cabernets, and then this 04 Shafer Hillside. Still a TON of black and blue cabernet fruits still available. This wine had a little bit of an interesting nose, but the palate made up for it in hedonistic aged cab glory....with the exception that it wan't showing many signs of age! This wine was a great companion to the others enjoyed this afternoon. For its age, this one had a bunch of youth to it. Hint of vanilla and almost like a gouda cheese note. Well balanced wine with tannin in check and ready to take on the world (finally!). Drink now or within the next five to ten years!

Some fruit left but it's best days are behind it.
