Robert Mondavi Winery
Oakville Cabernet Franc
Deep garnet color with a wide brim and dark purple undertones. Spice throughout, especially on the nose along with violets, dusty blackberries, and a good bit of oak. This isn’t trying to be French. At all. Proudly waving the Napa Valley flag, this is a big boy. As expected, higher alcohol than his Gallic cousins and fuller bodied. High acidity with smooth tannins and very tight at this stage, could probably do with a few more years in the bottle. Much less herbaceous than I expected but with some really beautiful red fruit on the palate. Plums, red cherries, and cassis is supplemented by plenty of oak, spice, and Newports. Some herbal notes come in to play on the medium long finish. This wine was more fun than I expected.
