Ridge Vineyards
Geyserville Sonoma County Zinfandel Blend
Very much still kicking, a good half decade after Mr. Draper’s suggested drinking window had elapsed (per the back label). Dried black and purple fruit, cedar, cocoa and roasted coffee

Jun 9th, 2023During the month of January, the Wednesday Wine Committee has a unique format...the sparkler, whites and dessert wines can be from any vintage and any location, but the reds must be from the 2007 vintage. It was my first time providing a wine for a lunch, so I was excited to see how it showed. As always, all wines were served blind.
My guess here was Zinfandel. Not jammy or overly hot in any way. Lots of spice and black pepper. Fruit was mainly red and black (no shade of purple in the glass). Fair bit of sediment. I love older zins.

The nose is spiced plums and blue fruits with decayed florals. The fruits have fallen into a date/prune phase. I said at some point in the tasting the 07 vintage that 07's wouldn't age as long as many thought. This is wine is proof. The 02 "G" aged better than this 07. Many compared it to 97 and it's certainly not 97. However, it still tastes very nice. The fruits are stewed; blackberries, blueberries, black plum, black raspberries, dark cherries, tarry anise, violets, spice, touch of pepper, stems, dry parsley, dry crushed rocks, warm dark earth, nice acidity and a rich polished fruit finish that lasts and lasts. If you have this vintage...no point in holding it any longer.
