Ravenswood Winery
Vintners Blend California Old Vine Zinfandel
Well today it’s a day after being on set with gorgeous drag ladies and an insta-model so I’m making myself feel better with the bottom level of my favorite grocery store wine. I fucking love Ravenswood. So this is entry level...but it is more than most top level grocery wines in my opinion. Less than ten bucks and so light for a zin which makes me like it because I don’t love over-oaked or over-ripe zins. It is not nuanced but has berries--and cherries!-- and dried cranberry and a whiff of black pepper. And a hint of raisin. Damn I love Ravenswood. I need to investigate if they have a wine club—oh! And I found out another Cali winemaker I love (Bedrock) was started by the son of Joel Peterson aka Ravenswood. The wine rocks on.

Mar 31st, 2018Abundant blackberry and black pepper flavours.
Deep plum, richly layered with firm tannins and full bodied.
An easy to drink bottle of wine. 🍷

Light ruby red. Has that jammy aroma. Also smells hot (lots o alcohol), but it’s only 13.5%. Bit of leather in the nose. Flavor is rich, jammy and smokey. A bit soft in the middle. Finish is mocha chip. Better the second day. For a $6 wine at Safeway, this ain’t too bad. It has some dim Zin characteristics and it’s powerful. Just a bit too muddled & lacks pizzazz.

May 23rd, 2019Spicy scents, but not much spice in the delivery. Fruit forward, strawberry and raspberry. Not terribly complex but good for an inexpensive glass from time to time.

Dec 30th, 2018Here we have another old vine Zinfandel from California!
I have been interested in the old vines these days and this one hooked me in with the 2015 vintage and of course the sale price.
This Zinfandel has a nose with character. A light swirl and a whiff will send notes of peppery spices through the nose, then a bit of oak along the tail end. That’ll give a little tickle to the olfactory.
Sipping and swishing the wine is also interesting to the senses...
This wine is also peppery to the tastebuds, along with hints of light berries. A “ripe raspberry” flavour definitely tingles with the taste as well, yum. I believe that any bottle with “old” in the name should resemble a ripe grape taste and this wine definitely does that by complimenting spices and ripe raspberries.
I am definitely impressed with this wine and I hope you will enjoy the character of this wine just as much as I am enjoying it. Cheers!

Some spicy but also fairly smooth. Good for the price.

Jul 8th, 2018Where to begin. This was purchased as a gesture of support for my boy (you all know who he is), who was up for a big job with the Ravenswood overlords. Foolishly, they did not hire him. Bottle’s been on metaphorical ice since then. Drinking more frequently as a new Dad means one can’t pop high quality stuff every night. So here we are.
Admittedly, I’m tempted to give this juice a 6.0 in an act of sweet, sweet vengeance. Alas, it’s truly fine. Smooth (it’s a Zinfandel) and totally one note. Would pair great with pizza, but show me a red that wouldn’t. Bottom line, living well is the best revenge. In other words, fuck ‘em.
