Flinty struck match with funk driven complexity. Under ripe white peach and grapefruit - crushed rocks and salinity on the medium bodied palate, however the intensity is bordering on the profound. See previous Delectable notes. Winner of the James Halliday Chardonnay challenge from 630 entries. Had another bottle 15 weeks later on 21st January 2024 with consistent notes. Funky, flinty and smoky. Ripe grapefruit on palate. 2 bottles left. Will save one for a 2015 vintage Chardonnay blind tasting with friends later in the year.

This wine won the 2016 James Halliday Chardonnay competition from 630 entries. A modern flinty funky nose. Great palate intensity showing a combination of citrus and stone fruit. The oak which was initially prominent has integrated perfectly giving a creamy texture, since the last one in 2019. A great effort from the Penfolds winemakers - getting the same results as their famous suite of red wines. I’ll drink the remaining 4 in the next few years.

Very pale lemon in colour. Funky solids aromas / intoxicating. Lots of winemaking on show here. Great intensity - taut and lean almost quivering with pentup energy. On palate grapefruit, lime and touch of pineapple. Lots of citric acid. Certainly a different animal to Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay which is full luscious peaches and cream. This wine from Penfolds won the 2016 James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge from 630 entries. Penfolds Winemakers for years have been concentrating on making their top white wines to the same standards as their famous reds and with this Chardonnay it is clear they are on the way to achieving this.
