The consensus was that this was the Grange of the night - the 1996. From a great vintage an almost perfect Grange. All the Choc Malt with Berry fruit power one could wish for. An inner core which will mean this wine will live until 2040 according to Penfolds and I would not doubt that. I know it is a cliche but this is The Iron Fist in the Velvet Glove. A great wine.

Not easy to judge during the blind tasting: mediterranen herbs balsamic perfumes mixed berries, straight but perfect tannins, decent acidity, rich but not overripe at all.. you guess a sort of an orgasmic fusion, a ménage-à-trois among Hermitage/Sangiovese/Barolo..

What else could I rate it? Morello cherries, sour plum, vanilla, expertly balanced tannins. Took a while to open, but lived up to its reputation.
