An unexpected surprise from our host, Paul Lister, at Alladale Lodge Scotland, where he produced a mixed half dozen of 2004 Pax Syrah from different vineyards left by a former guest. A marvellous fragrant nose showing mature smoky meaty Syrah notes with savoury black cherry - also Bacon fat. Similar notes carrying thru onto the palate finishing with mellow resolved flowing Tannins. The 16.2 % ABV not noticeable. This wine was reminiscent of Henschke Hill of Grace for me. Cork broke in half trying to extract but in no way effected the wine. My first aged US Syrah and most impressed.

Comes from a single block of the Alder Springs vineyard. 16% alcohol! Vinous called it “feral” which is a pretty accurate descriptor. The most concentrated Pax I have ever had. Massive black fruit, pepper, raw bacon and dark molasses. Very complex with a 30 second finish. Awesome stuff! Especially for $40 from the Old and Rare section of K&L. Glad I bought a couple. Loads of time left.

The bottle that turn me on to Rhone. So good. All still there.

Drinking well, fruit still intact with modest tannins holding everything together

Surprisingly not as rich as I would have expected for a 15.0 juice.

A show stopper of a Syrah. Happy where it's at, although next time I think that I will wait a couple years for it to mature more. A true Vin du Garde nonetheless. Expressive, unique and exciting! @Pax Mahle @Jason Ruppert
