Happy Halloween (again). Next up 2012 Nickel & Nickel. I chose opening the State Ranch (Yountville) bc it's probably the lightest and most approachable of the '12s from N&N. It's not one of their big Napa cabs: much more subtle. Some nice chocolate and blueberry notes

2009 Vintage tasted July 2015. Purchased direct from tasting room a few years ago. Lighter than expected on the nose with whiff of dark fruits. Mix of red/black fruit melds into oak, liquorice mouthfeel, and hint of cigar box. Considerable balance.

Had a glass... Then turned it into a holiday drink by bringing the wine, sugar and mulling spices to a simmer for 20 minutes... YUM!!

Nose of; slightly candied, juicy and ripe; black cherries, strawberries, blackberries, black raspberries with dark florals and violets. Palate has; dark currants, spiced black plum, strawberries, pomegranate, dark cherries, anise, M+ tannin that are soft, dark fresh flowers, violets, lavender, crushed rocks, dark dry soils, chewy leather, red vines licorice & cherry cola. The finish is; rich, ripe, round, long with good acidity. Barrel tasted the 2016 vintage at the Nickel & Nickel Entrecôte. Photos of the "State Ranch Vineyard" in Yountville, Bale clay soil and the decor and lighting of their cellar for the event.

First of the two single vineyard bottlings at Classic Wines of Great Falls. Deep purplish ruby red. Layered nose with slate, dark raspberries, and dark cocoa. Moderate tannins (7/10) and full bodied. Stoney backbone with balanced acidity. Dark palate with spices, as well as baking spices and dark red berries. Lingering finish. This is a baby that needs some time to develop. Drink till 2029. Fruit didn't seem quite right. The fruit might not have been picked at the ideal time or it was simply very closed down. Dark cherries, strawberries dark raspberries, blackberries, light herbs, wet black earth, soft leather and saw dust.
