Moss Wood
Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon
A little cool coming out of the cellar. 2 of life’s great pleasures / an aged Margaret River Cabernet and a grass fed Rib Fillet. You would not pick this as 16 years old in a blind tasting. My wife and I traditionally do this exercise and she is usually very close but missed this one by 9 years! Initial herbal bracken aromas with some berry notes still persisting in this warmer year. On the palate savoury yet fleshy berry flavours with M+ intensity finishing with fine powdery Tannins. So lively and fresh I will leave my last one until 2023 for its 20th Birthday.

Aug 15th, 2019From Magnum. Had been decanted for about an hour and s half. Quite stinky which largely blew off to reveal leafy herbaceous characters with mint. Just medium bodied but such good balance and harmony. At that stage of just “damn good claret “ with nothing in particular standing out. A few years ago it was stunning and more powerful. Jancis Robinson still scores on the old 20 points score and gave this wine 19 points, a score generally reserved for 1st Growth Bordeaux and Grand Cru Burgundy. Great wine but time to drink it.

May 20th, 2019Rustic on the nose, thyme, brewed tea leaves. Dark ruby, moderate to moderate plus concentration and staining, plush, juicy, and ripe fruits on palate, green pepper. Medium to medium plus acidity, elevated tannin and body.

Velvety, like a big soft bear hug! Great smooth leather and tobacco notes. Still very fruity for its age.

1 person found it helpfulJun 22nd, 2014Expectations have killed this wine for me. Huge Cabernet, might be good in 10-15 years.
Fruit bomb at the moment and not much more. Had like a blanket over all the rest( what is the rest I don't know yet). Disappointing altogether though 😢

Aug 5th, 2016Back in the early 90s Moss Wood used to make this standard Cab and also a Reserve which spent an extra year in French barriques. This was the standard and was magnificent. Nose of cedar, black currant and herbs. Brilliant mature Cabernet. Could have easily been a high ranked left bank classed growth. This is why one cellars wine.

Jul 13th, 2016From magnum at the Annual Judges Dinner at the Toowoomba Wine Show. Having a little more vigour than the 750 ml bottle I had a few months ago. Beautiful nose; herbal with brambly notes and amazing length. Lovely wine.

Jun 4th, 2016Typical herbaceous brambly style from this maker with notes of geranium. Moss Wood in a lesser year but still an excellent Cabernet- one of Australia's best.
