Morris
Topaque Classic Liqueur Muscadelle
It’s not often I drink wine liqueurs or ‘sweeties’, but occasionally I do have a craving! Recently I came across Cider Tonic’s stewed apple tonic recipe (which is good for your gut health by the way) and I couldn’t help but think that all that stewed apple would be great in a homemade apple pie. With vanilla bean ice-cream on the side and a little something special to sip on of course 😉
A little while ago I received this sample of the Morris Wines of Rutherglen’s Classic Liqueur Topaque, which has been sitting in our fridge far too long. I was waiting for the perfect occasion and this apple pie night was it!
This was my introduction to the wine on the box:
This Classic Liqueur Topaque is made from Muscadelle grapes that are allowed to fully ripen during the long, warm, dry summers experiences in the Rutherglen region. The wine is aged in oak for a number of years before blending with wines from a number of vintages”
It’s the perfect dessert, or cheese, wine. And oh boy did it make our apple pie & ice-cream night pretty decadent. Talk about a hug in a glass / on a plate! Here are my notes:
It’s golden syrup in colour. The nose makes me think of caramel, raisins, candied lemons and tea leaves. While in the mouth it’s luscious and sweet with a nice lemon acidity balance, a hint of honey iced tea and a lick of smoke.
This wine was sent to me direct from the winery as a sample, I was under no obligation to post about it.
All opinions are based on my own taste buds. Wine is subjective & always evolving, so make sure you drink what you enjoy!

[Delectable — Not sure this is really a “liqueur”, the label is simply as shown]. We tasted through Rutherglen yesterday (5 wineries), this Morris was one of our faves, Topaque=Muscadelle and used to be called “Tokay” (but apparently the Hungarians, after MANY YEARS, finally raised holy heck, so “Topaque” it now is), these solera-style stickies are absolutely lovely, with 4 ascending levels of sweetness/thickness (Rutherglen, Classic, Grand and Rare). We found the “Classic” best for us. Great intensity, but balanced, not too thick and heavy, excellent!!
