Monte Maletto
Carema Sole e Roccia Nebbiolo
2017; Cork pulled for slow oxidation +24H.
A wonderful, mountain Nebbiolo, barely any production, a total gem for any cellar...
See prior notes on this vintage. Nose is initially closed down slightly, but expanding now that it's getting aeration in the glass.

Magic. Just magic. One sniff and you are in heaven. So bright and lifted but also so classic and earthy. Bright, perfectly ripe cherrie that are so stunning one just stops and thinks, “have I ever really smelled a cherry before?” It has that strawberry also that one gets in elite Barbaresco. Just elite aromas. So elegant. If any aromas are elegant it’s these. The palate has come to play! And play it does. Wow this elegant. It truly floats like a butterfly but does not sting, just soaks fruit that is so pure, so velvety and so succulent one cannot believe. Masterful balance and purity. This would be $100 in the Langhe. Long finish that dissipates wonderfully. Stunning inner mouth aromas and the classicism is off the charts. There is a controlled rustic that is there that is magical. Haunting, ethereal and elegant, with superb structure, sap and depth. God this is so pretty. A lovely well knit structure as well. As it airs the structure becomes more prominent and hints of a long life. Easiest 9.5 I’ve ever given on here.

Mar 16th, 2021Nose has perfectly ripe cherries, white pepper, dehydrated strawberry, dry tobacco, old dusty oak firewood and anise spice notes.
Palate has sweet cherry, licorice, dried tart cherries, dried strawberries, great acid/fruit tension, medium tannins with a fantastic never-ending finish. What a great example of the ultimate mountain Nebbiolo!
Second vintage produced, with 2016 being the first release. 1250 bottles produced.
Cork pulled for slow oxidation 8H, then decanted 3H, more bottle time appreciated. 2027-32+
Wonderfully paired to a homemade Bolognese over Pappardelle.
