A bit hard and musty upon opening. With air this began to soften and become more expressive. Didn’t show its best until day two when it showed nice balance of fruit and maturity.

This was a fun ride as it evolved over a few hours. One of the great California Merlot producers of the era, even in this poor vintage (unfortunately no longer great post acquisition).

Really beautifully aged - complex, dark chocolate, smoked meat, berry and malt.

I have always heard good things about 80's and early 90's Matanzas Merlots prior to the winery being acquired by Jackson Family Wines so I was excited to try this. Popped and poured and consumed over 3 hours. This had a musty nose that just seemed to be blowing off when we finished the bottle. Very little fruit remaining, but this had an earthy chocolate flavor on the palate that I really enjoyed. Nice color and no signs of oxidation. I have one more of these and will give it more air next time.

Afraid this one is past peak. Still nice but has lost some fruit and comes across as lean and warm. Too bad -- these once were awesome as recently as a few years ago...
