Luis Pato
Vinho Rosé Baga
I had this exactly a year ago, and it tastes much better now. Maybe it needed that extra time, or my palate is different. Still strong acidity and grappa notes, but the finish is long and feels more layered. Apricots, herbs, dried orange peel. Not so much prune as before. One left in the cellar, so I’ll try again next year.

Aug 31st, 2023If there is a rose to age and still come out fresh, this is it. It comes across a bit orange wine, with a bit of sweet petrol nose. Strawberries, watermelon rind, crisp watermelon, blood orange. It’s fantastic. Wish I bought more.

Jul 3rd, 2023Maybe the most intriguing rosé I’ve tried, and the first truly aged. When Luis Pato produced this, he decided it was too reduced and acidic to sell. So he stored it and forgot about it for 17 years. What emerged has prune, sherry, even grappa notes from the aging that cut through the expected rosé berry flavors. A bit funky, with a muted acidity that is still strongly present. For me, it wavers - one sip is great, the next, off putting. Complex, mixed, long finish. Good for late summer as autumn creeps closer. Definitely for a more adventurous wine lover - polarizing, unique and interesting, but not a crowd pleaser.
