Had this at a tasting recently, has not aged well. Deep Ruby with red fruit aromas with oak and pepper spice. On the palate cherry and raspberry with pepper and tobacco and spice with high acidity, balance a little off. Fine tannins, medium finish ending with heavy toasty oaky spice character. Ok but getting past it’s prime, over priced, drink now. Tasting Sample.

Had this 9 months ago, not aging well. Deep Ruby with earthy red fruit aromas and spicy oak, aged 3 years in oak and 2 in the bottle before release. On the palate blackberry and black cherry with pepper and herb spice, high acidity. Hard tannins, medium finish ending with spice character. Not pleasant. Tasting Sample.

Deep Ruby with fresh red fruit aromas and a touch of oak and spice. On the palate cherry and raspberry with pepper, tobacco and cacao spice with lively acidity and good balance. Fine soft tannins, medium finish ending with toasty oaky spice character. Ok for price but better ones available. Tasting Sample.

A pretty darned good example of classic Rioja if you ask me. It has that neutral American oak feel that really just showcases the good fruit and all that funky earthy goodness that comes from age. Pretty young for 12 years old, full of fruit and loads of spice. Fun to smell - pipe tobacco, saddle leather, cracked black peppercorn, charred cedar, crushed pomm seed, red plum, violets and a touch of grilled meat. Elegant in feel, ample fruit in the core still - dark raspberry and dark cherries, bell pepper, tobacco, boiled red apple skins, dried herbs, nutmeg, clove, star anise, and a long finish. With smoked Gouda, or other hard cheeses, the earth and funk all fall away, leaving a delicious fruitiness behind.

Jan 14, 2022. Enjoying Spanish wines this week. Lovely Rioja. Definitely a drink bow, but didn’t seem past prime to me. Of course, I didn’t have it a couple years ago so perhaps I’m not the best judge. It still has nice fruit flavors and some chocolate notes.

Cooked dark fruit on nose and palate, some earth / butter in middle and finish.

$30 for a bottle for the gran reserva Rioja at total wine.. OK. Not a repeat.

Not what I usually like and not a fantastic expression of those things — oak, vanilla, big smoke — but it weirdly hit the spot. Might be a Total Wine wine find, or might be a loving slap to the face. I might buy it again.

Most excellent. I found this that best describes this wine better.

Ripe berry aromas are oaky and include a note of woody vanilla. On the palate, this is tight and has a resiny texture from extended barrel aging. Oak-heavy flavors of vanilla and berries finish with chocolate and a medicinal hint. Drink through 2032. - MICHAEL SCHACHNER
