La Scolca
Gavi dei Gavi (G dei G) D'antan Cortese
#AgedWineTuesday
This is a very interesting aged white wine from Italy.
Golden in color, with a very muted nose.
Medium plus in body and dry on the palate, with medium plus acidity.
Showing lemons, green apples, limes, spices, earth, light butter, grass, herbs and minerals.
This is a nice surprise. This 15 year old is still drinking nicely. Spicy and entertaining.
Fruits are already a bit muted by now. Showing nice complexity with a nice, smooth mouthfeel.
100% Cortese grapes from Piedmont. Aged in the bottle for 10 years in the winery's Cellars.
11.5% alcohol by volume.
89 points.
$80.

With 10 years aging on the lees in stainless steel this is a quirky wine with lots of autolytic flavors - it will seem funky to many tasters without a lot of experience with older wines. For fans of older wines this has great complexity and depth and surprisingly, it's quite mellow without the heavy acidity that overtakes some older whites. Definitely a rarity and a treat for the palate
