Kuhlman Cellars
Texas High Plains Viognier
Continuing my journey through TX wines...@Mark Flesher and I compared some ‘16 TX viogniers, and it was a treat to see the differences.
This Viognier had a lot of typical notes that I expected, especially on the nose, like mint and white flower. Acidity was medium. Palate was sharp, lemon-lime dominant, with a soft honeyed finish. The nose on this was killer. Nice wine @Mark Flesher !

On the wings of the 2017 release, this 2016 is still on the way up. The acidity here is still rather crisp and quite aggressive. On the palate is lemon curd and Granny Smith apple. Grapefruit middle. Quite lemongrass-rich finish. Still lighter and crisp. Went well with Chicken-Alfredo-Spinach-Olive pizza. No need to Coravin this as it will be gone in no time!

Mar 29th, 2018Must admit: this was the first viognier that I thought "huh??" to when I first enjoyed it....and had serious second thoughts about its future. Well, this one realigned me. At this point I will say that, if this Viognier asked me to jump, I'd ask how high. Acidity high on the opening. Lemon curd and sharp, acidic Asian pear dominate the front. There is a cinnamon note in the middle of this one, and finishes with a lot of crisp citrus notes of pineapple, mango, and limestone. Dang. I was wondering what I was going to do with the other five bottles, but now I think I definitely know.

Jan 30th, 2018OK, so the first one of the new vintage went down tonight! And, dare I say that I think that this one is going to hold just as well as the 2015. I still need to take one of these to the lockup. This seems to be a more acidic Viognier than the 2015. Mouthfeel on entry is thicker than the wine evolves to be. First is a lot of mango and a hint of kiwi, and ends with more acidic citrus notes with a hint of honeysuckle. Bought slightly more of this than the Roussanne. Haven't had any of that yet, but soon!

Oct 8th, 2017One more of these left! This one was consumed after the news of the 2016's release! One more that will be a library wine to keep the vertical (wonder how long it can go?). This wine for the first 30 minutes was a bit funky. Burned butter on the nose, and a strange sauteed mushroom butter and herb funk right on the front of the palate. With some air, this one settled into the nice navel orange, peach, pineapple and mango finish wine that it has been all year. Supposedly the 2016 outdoes this wine, so it will be bought VERY soon!
