Medium deep ruby color. Firey, flinty and Smokey on the nose. On the palate there’s a delicate, sweet attack followed by a medium(+) body and secondary flavors of eucalyptus, bay leaf and black fruit. Delicious. #elgin #syrah #southafrica

1 person found it helpfulMay 4th, 2016Surprisingly similar syrah to Cornas; but this is South African Kershaw looking so European; that wild herb, tobacco, sage, earth nose; obviously the terroir of Elgin; not as hot as Cornas so less rich more tight textured; oak behind; sounds like syrah aged all its barrel life on gross lees; 18 barriques; made by colleague Richard Kershaw MW #southafrica #elgin #cape #syrah #2012 13.5%

After a short decant this wine blossomed with notes of blackberry preserves, black cherry, violet, dried mint, cured meat, smoke, leather, peppercorn, peat moss, potting soil, espresso, vanilla, nutmeg, and cardamom. Yum!

Mar 15th, 2022Cannot day enough good things about this well balanced South African Chardonnay. One of my new faves. Definitely some ML and warm fruit which gives it a full soft body but nice balance of acid for a crisp apple finish.

2013. I'm on a big new South Africa kick, and these guys are hyped, but not for me. Decent and all, but not that memorable on night one and a big hit of oak on night two.
