Kenneth Volk
Pomar Junction Vineyard Blaufränkisch
2012 Blaufrankish. Savory herbs and black cherries and raspberries on the nose lead to a spicy palate that finishes prickly and has a great amount of body to it. I'm partial to Kenneth Volk, he's one of my favorite producers.

Sep 21st, 2016Strange, uncommon grape in CA. Pours deep maroon with a tint of blood red. Smells musky and perfumed in a damask rose and fresh ripe plums kind of way. Flavors also bring a hint of musk. Plenty of cola. Some dark tree and vine fruits. The acids are excellent though. Really a unique and fleshy wine. Tart like cool climate Grenache, woodsy like Tempranillo, and just plain interesting in its own way.

Oct 2nd, 2021Medium bodied, berry fruit cut by good acid and a subtle savory/saline funk on both the nose and finish. Lots to like here and confirms my current Austrian red crush (even tho from Paso!)

From the winery: Non Vintage Blaufrankish (the blue Frank) is a dark blue-skinned wine grape that has been grown in Central Europe for centuries under various other names. Rare in California, Blaufrankisch produces delicious medium-bodied, fruit-driven wines with spicy aromas and flavors of ripe blueberry, cherry and blackberry. Blaufrankish can complement simple grilled and barbequeed foods or wild game.
