Hugel et Fils
Schoelhammer Riesling
93-94 all day.
Lovely visit to Hugel last Fall. Of all our visits, what made Hugel unique was they seem to reach a level of depth and power that isn’t super common (as opposed to the striking acidity and brightness of others). Gorgeous wines.
My first time with the 2007 Schoelhammer. Pours an almost gold in the glass. Slight hint of petrol aromatically but mostly tropical yellow fruits, lime zest, and a kiss of honey. Once on the palate, the verve picks up in acidity, surrounded by honeyed Granny Smith apple, limestone/mineral, apple crisp, and a honeyed richness which gives a perception of sweetness (even though this is dry). The depth and mid-palate here is what sets it apart. No rush. Not sure it improves but it certainly isn’t falling off a cliff. Wonderful expression.

This bottle was fantastic. Precision, energy, and elegance.

Sep 22nd, 2017What a great wine. A little thinner than what I remember from previous bottles but full of ripe fruit backed by just enough acid. Great alongside foie gras and Lyonnaise salad one night and a Thai curry the next. UPDATE: another bottle in ‘24 and it’s still wonderfully vibrant and young, maintaining its color and mix of syrupy and tangy flavors.

May 28th, 2020Pale yellow. Nose of lychee melon. Very crisp. Tart. Green Apple very dry. Not my favorite. I was hoping for more character to offset the dryness.

Jun 4th, 2019Single vineyard, not made every year. Dense and long, so the Riesling pleasure just keeps on coming.
