Iphöfer Kalb Silvaner

This was sooo fucking cool. Precise and concentrated freshness. Huge florals on the nose—jasmine and pink springtime flowers. The palate was all pear and tropical fruit with a perfect undercurrent of buzzing acidity. Something lush and opulent was peaking through as well, maybe some vanilla or cream but would need to try again in a slightly more sober mindset to really pin it down.

Few things in this world please me as much as “Grand Cru” Silvaner and when said Silvaner comes in the traditional Bocksbeutel (also the slang term for a ram’s scrotum), I am in heaven.
Summer jasmine, lemon, green apple, tart pear, vanilla, chalk/white stones on the nose and palate. There’s a hint of something tropical poking through. I’ve never had a Silvaner this floral. This wine has a lovely grace on the palate with a fresh, poised and harmonious acidity that builds slowly, offering crispness, tension and precision, without ever drawing attention to itself. I’m glad to see this damn delicious grape getting the treatment it deserves.
I find myself repeating the word“fresh” whenever I describe Silvaner, because that’s what it embodies to me — fresh, vibrant, zesty, zingy, green, youthful. It’s a friendly and humble wine with a great sense of humor and a mischievous smirk.
