Oloroso sherry in color. Nose: earthy aromas, peat, turf, wet forest floor, Japanese cedar, dried herbs, vanilla, cigar smoke, and subtle green fruits in the background. Thick, syrupy mouthfeel. Palate: Up front, loads of peat, campfire smoke, pine needles, and incense. Dried apples, creme brûlée, and Asian pear round out the luxurious finish. Yamazaki gets a lot of the attention, but aged Hakushu is the mountains and forests of Japan in a glass!
