Goyo Garcia Viadero
Finca Viñas de Arcilla Ribera del Duero Tempranillo
This is probably the boldest of Goyo Garcia Viadero’s single-vineyard wines. 100% Tempranillo from a very old vineyard at 800m elevation in Anguix on predominantly clay soils. Fermented with indigenous yeasts. Deep color. Intense nose with aromas of dark fruit, cedar and hints of menthol/medicinal notes. Medium to full-bodied. Serious, concentrated, quite tannic. Good freshness, pleasant to drink.

Apr 3rd, 2019Refreshing, great fruit and not too acidic - unusually balanced for a biodynamic.

Sep 10th, 2017Oh Tempranillo. Such a lovely (all natural) wine. Light but velvety. Stone fruit with a little cigar smoke. Delish!

Dec 1st, 2016I think this is showing a little disjointed at the moment, and I'm going to try to wait a few months before sampling the other 2010s from Viadero. Can't say for sure as my only previous experience with the producer was the '09 Valdeolmos, and it's possible that this site just isn't at the same level. The tannins here are fairly rustic and screechy and the fruit material not nearly as generous or enveloping as the Valdeolmos last year. The fruit also isn't as deep and intense. It's (unsurprisingly) fatter and more primary than a traditional Rioja with a longer elevage, but a lot of the flavors are similar, with apple flavors being the most prominent. It's interesting that there is so much treble here as this is the only one of the wines from Viadero that's 100% tempranillo without any white grapes.
