Brought to dinner, opened and poured into a decanter just prior to service; enjoyed over the course of 90min. This was my last bottle of the 1994 Rosso del Bepi and I found it to be similarly sensational to the previous bottle that was enjoyed a couple years prior. The wine pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous with a mix of ripe, tart and desiccated black fruit: brambles, pomegranate, Montmorency cherry, plums, spiced meat, ginger, old leather, dried flowers and just a kiss of VA. On the palate, the wine is dry (technically) though there’s some obvious residual sugar; medium tannin (integrated) and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. This finish is long. As I stated earlier, another outstanding showing. Drink now through 2030.

Basically Amarone, “Rosso del Bepi” is only made when the quality isn’t quite high enough to bottle their Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. If it’s a bad vintage all together, neither wine are made. This bottle was made when “Bepi” was still involved in the winemaking process. Poured into a decanter about an hour before service. Cork was perfect. The nose? Amongst the most fascinating I have ever encountered from a red wine: black desiccated fruit, beef broth, cloves, well conditioned leather, old Christmas candle, Digestive biscuits, like I’m riding in my grandma’s 1979 Buick Regal, potpourri, and just a kiss of VA. It’s no less exciting on the palate. The dark desiccated fruit is confirmed and accompanied by ginger, pomegranate, Montmorency cherry, and spices. The wine is dry and longer than a youth dance recital. This is a killer example of a well-aged wine from Veneto from an absolutely legendary producer. Over the six hours we had this in the decanter, it continued to open and deliver excitement like Patrick Mahomes carving up a defense. I’m so grateful to have more of this wine. Drink now with a short decant. Properly stored examples should drink well over the next 10 years.
