Giaconda
Pinot Noir
Victoria, Australia
This wine has the potential to be very good, but at only 10 years under Stelvin, it is still a baby. Makes one wish for a real cork. The nose is a very appealing funky and earthy mess of plums and black cherries. The wine is dark, about as dark as Pinot gets. On the palate, it is exuberantly lively. A piercing acidity leads into a sweet-tart cherry and red raspberry fruit profile. The finish is extremely long. This is a wine of great precision, yet one which has not yet shed its baby fat and one wonders if it ever will under the screw cap. The fruit and acid are still a bit disjoint and raw. Should age for years.

On the first whiff, I think of red fruits stewed in soya sauce if that even makes sense. Probably not going to get any better from here on. Fading fruit on the palate, although it did come on strong and sweet in the front. Oaky spice and dusty notes to finish.
A pleasure and privelege to drink. The age definitely shows, but I can't say I didn't crack a smile - I've had oldies far younger that didn't hold up this well. Good to note that it's also probably one of the first vintages of Giaconda's Pinot Noir.

Long finish lots of tanins and fruits hard to distinguish needs time

The colour especially the deep saturation is amazing for a 15yo wine... A Pinot from Australia for that matter! Initial sniffs are redolent of dark prunes then fresh stem which is quite pleasant. The sweet and tart juxtaposes for your attention as the acid line is as undecided as you are.
